Originally released in 1998, this sixth album from inimitable The Tragically Hip was home to three of the band's biggest hits. To celebrate the 25 years since its release, we're treated to this 5xLP Vinyl Deluxe Edition, which includes five never before heard tracks from the original sessions, two albums of a live show from Pittsburgh, and seven alternate versions selected by the band.
The crisp drumming from Johnny Fay starts the melodic and rhythmic “The Poets”, where Gord Downie's distinct vocals are a bit rugged. It isn't long until the thick guitars from Rob Baker and Paul Langlois give an alt-rock edge across “Save The Planet”, and “Emperor Penguin” finishes the original album with Downie's rich singing suiting the textured rock that's a bit dreamy.
The back half of LP two offers us bonus tracks, where “Songwriter's Cabel” is particularly intimate, as bright storytelling leads into a darker quality, which flows into the acoustic beauty of the heartfelt “Mystery”.
LP three and four were captured live on October 2, 1998 at the Metropol in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and documents the band's dynamic energy across tunes like “Gift Shop”, “Twist My Arm”, “Springtime In Vienna” and “At The Hundredth Meridian”, plus many others.
The last record is where the diehard fans will be parked at. The alternate takes of the breezy and harmonic “Something On” and the swift, rootsy flavored rocker “Fireworks” don't disappoint. “Escape Is At The Hand For The Travellin' Man” then exits with Gord Sinclair's gripping bass matching Downie's elegant singing for the thoughtful last track.
An incredible package for both the longtime fan and newcomer to one of Canada's finest, there's a 64 page book, signed publicity photo, sticker sheet and 24 page illustrated video storyboard to accompany the timeless and memorable songs.
