In 2022, the multi-dimensional artist Grammy winner and Emmy nominee Grey DeLisle returned to song after a 20-year break for a well-received covers record. Now, we’re treated to a double LP of vignettes that explores love gone awry, raising children when divorced, and her Mexican heritage.
“Hello I’m Lonesome” gets the listen off to a warm start thanks to DeLisle’s pretty voice and Greg Leisz’s cozy steel guitar, and it isn’t long until “A Coastal Town” welcomes Tammy Rogers’ violin and viola to the intimate and gentle delivery.
Deeper into the first half, “Tomorrow (Without You)” recruits Phil Jones on drums and Marvin Etzioni’s electric guitar via the chamber-influenced folk nods, but it’s DeLisle’s spoken word, autoharp and poetic singing that makes “Daddy Can You Fix A Broken Heart” the standout tune.
Moving into the second LP, “Convince Me” is a bare moment of beauty and emotion thanks to DeLisle’s stirring pipes, while “My Darlin’ Vivian” makes great use of mandola and porchboard that illuminates the eloquent climate.
The last two tracks are also well thought out and memorable. “Take Me Dancing Again” uses David Ralicke’s well timed trumpet that complements the expressive vocals, and “Red Dress” exits with the Old 97s’ Murry Hammond’s pretty acoustic guitar and Etzion’s mandolins for the lovely finish to this seventh studio record.
An accomplished artist in the area of voice work, DeLisle has worked on The Simpsons as Martin, Scooby-Doo as Daphne and Spongebob Squarepants as Preda Tory and Big Roxie, plus many more. This return to music is a long time coming, and the contributions from the many players on hand helps warrant comparisons to Loretta Lynn, June Carter Cash, Dolly Parton or even her mentor, Rodney Crowell.
