The Spokane, Washington artist Chuck Vibes makes music that’s about as eclectic as you’ll hear anywhere. The 15 tracks on GHTM–assembled from his first two Eps—document his complicated journey with equally intricate music that is all over the spectrum.
The 25-second intro “I Wrote This In Gotham” opens with a quick ambience before the dreamy and layered “Ghostbusters” follows with punchy drums, bright singing and a floating atmosphere.
“Dracula” arrives next, and uses a radiant guitar tone and vocal effects with intrigue, while “Berlin” carries a darker tone and throbbing backdrop that might bring to mind early ’80s post-punk from across the pond. Closer to the middle, the echoing “Coachella” shimmers with melodic gestures that are dance floor ready, and the more dense “Cranberry Soda” emits an ominous mood that’s stylish and a bit droning.
The back half of the listen doesn’t disappoint either. “Sweet-ish” is barely over a minute but leaves an impression with its scrappy, garage-rock presence, and the beat-driven “Adam Sandler Movies” finds its way into dream-pop territory via its infectious energy.
Residing close to the end, “My Ashtray Is Full” comes with a punk attitude packed into a club-friendly demeanor that’s defiant from beginning to end, and “Nightwing” exits with quick drumming, waves of ambience and Vibes’ harmonic vocals.
The number of genres packed into this record is nothing short of astounding. Goth, emo, hip-hop, trap, shoegaze, breakbeat, electro-pop and a bunch of other subgenres I’ve never heard of are all covered. Coming up with similar bands, however, is a bit easier—it’s safe to say that if The Cure, Joy Division, Smashing Pumpkins and Current Joys hold your interest, well then, so will Chuck Vibes.
