Classic Albums Volume 2

Alien Sex Fiend

Cherry Red Records, 2016

REVIEW BY: Mark Kadzielawa

Alien Sex Fiend defined everything that was weird and unusual. This set continues with four more records: my_heart_sings_the_harmony_web_ad_alt_250 Here Cum Germs (1987), Another Planet (1988), Curse (1990), Open Head Surgery (1992). This is a very dark music, and the albums presented here date from 1987 to 1992. They’re from a time where one decade had ended and another one was beginning, and it was the same with the band, too. The alternative nature of the early ‘90s were just right for what Alien Sex Fiend was trying to achieve, but even then, they still stood out from the rest. The advancement in technology is very noticeable in how the latter albums were recorded, but the spirit throughout the four records is very similar.

The cool thing about this box is that the albums are very hard to find, especially overseas, so this set manages to revive some of the music. The box is designed very similar to the first one, so there is continuity in how both sets appear. It is very pleasing to the eye and musically assaulting to your ear.

What's really interesting about this band is that they were trying to invent their own genre. Here you had a group of musicians who had their own sort of club, and then decided they were going to be completely different. They took a lot of chances, found fans, and became the immortals.

Alien Sex Fiend is a great testament to the ‘80s. Regardless how one feels about that decade, it certainly was an original one, and many of its acts are still with us. ASF is definitely a good example of that. If industrial goth is your thing, put your strobe lights on and enjoy to the max...But remember, you were warned!
