John McLaughlin is now six decades and several dozen albums into his career. He is known as one of founders of jazz-rock fusion. His Manavishnu Orchestra added spiritual and Indian elements to the sound and consistently explored new musical territory.my_heart_sings_the_harmony_web_ad_alt_250

His 90-minute set at the legendary Monteux Jazz Festival during 2022 was a live career retrospective covering all parts of his career. Joined by special guest pianist and vocalist Jany McPherson, the octogenarian proved that he has lost little of the dexterity and power that has made him one of the better guitarists of the last 60 years.  His ability to fuse technical skill with emotion is at the core of his music.

Backed by his band, The 4th Dimension, he makes numerous stops along his career path. “The Creator Has A Master Plan,” “El Hombre Que Sabis” and “Lock Down Blues” are extended trips through his musical concepts as he solos and then draws back into the safety of his backing group.

His solo on “Hijacked” is effortless, but technically brilliant as he changes tempos and notes at will. “Abbai” and “Garza City” find him exploring Eastern Mysticism. The album includes half a dozen more titles spanning his full 90-minute show.

Now in his early 80s, John McLaughlin here offers a fine career retrospective by a guitar master that is worth exploring. Live At Montreux Jazz Festival is available on Blu-ray + 2CDs, as well as a heavyweight double vinyl LP.
