The globally revered artist Raymond Pettibon and avant-garde composer Daniel Adams come together for this iconoclastic album that was recorded to 24-track analog tape, comes with a lot of grit, and stands for The Inimitable Trillion Stars.

“Wacky Sensation” starts with Pettibon’s talking and singing that seems like random thoughts expelled alongside Adams’ swirling guitar and lively drum fills that make for some type of punk sounds. “Booty Girl” then gets a bit spacey, as the thick guitars and thumping drums guide the driving rock and sing-alongs.

“King Rat Pack” then wanders a bit with ambience and layers of playful storytelling across the quirky climate, while “Maroon Cocksucker Lipstick” uses rumbling bass and smooth female vocals for a nearly soothing delivery. “Dragstripper” finishes side A and it’s a bit jangly before abruptly bursting into some prog-punk territory.

The second half of the record opens with “Sunset Plaza,” where pretty singing is met with a darker spirit in between the thick bouts, and “Sagitariass” recruits Pettibon’s prose set to meticulous guitar and frisky drumming.

Deeper still, “Space Mutha” blurs the guitar alongside the ’90s alt-rock nods and “Thumbtrucker” blends college rock with an atmosphere that’s atypical and raw. “Charles In Charge” exits, and it’s a pounding, avant-garde exploration of conversational singing that further solidifies the unconventional appeal of the entire record.

Even if you’ve never heard of Pettibon, you’ve seen his work. He created the instantly recognizable Black Flag four bar logo, and did the cover art for bands like Foo Fighters, Sonic Youth and Mike Watt, plus many more. This is his first stab at songwriting and his lyrics are quite odd but always intriguing.

The music, well, it’s got some punk spirit, but also touches on abstractness, psychedelic, existentialism, electronic, noise, surf and artistic areas that leave the listener perplexed in the best way.
