A Norwegian duo with an affinity for dream-pop sounds, Misty Coast (i.e. Linn Frokedal and Richard Myklebust) presents a new album that pulls from pop, noise and experimental ideas for 11 tracks that are nothing short of irresistible.
The sugary sweet title track opens with Linn’s pretty voice that suits the swirling guitars and synth that carries plenty of fuzz under the melody. “Honey & Cinnamon” follows with more emphasis on drums in the busy climate that could also soundtrack an evening at the club, while the radiant keys of “Spring” are met with a distinct dreaminess.
The last two tracks on Side A are equally great. “Humming Bees” comes with softer vocals that complement the gentle instrumentation, and “Hallucinating” finishes the first half with firm keys and crisp drumming that aligns with a slight jangle and some cosmic bouts, too.
Side B leads with “Catch Me If You Can,” where a cinematic atmosphere segues into glitchy pop ideas, and “Blessed” takes that one step further with some strategic psychedelia surrounding the dense haze. Inching towards the end, the infectious synth-pop of “Needy” flirts with alt-rock stabs in between the prettiness, but it’s the pushing and pulling of the multi-faceted “Sway” that’s a late album standout and will also appeal to the post-punk crowd. “The Encore” is the last tune, and it allows for both members to sing in a soft and intimate finish.
The pair are joined by Hakon Brunborg (viola, violin, keys, guitar, vocals, pedal steel), Kim Age Furuhaug (drums), and Eirik Kirkemyr (drums, percussion) on select tracks, and if bands like Cocteau Twins, Flaming Lips, PJ Harvey or Mazzy Star are of importance to you, make some room on your turntable for Misty Coast, ’cause they are excellent.
