Here are another 5 quick picks for you, the loyal reader:
MUSIC: Nirvana / Live At Reading – It almost goes without saying that a new Nirvana release is big news. In this case, Live At Reading is both a CD and DVD –- although available for purchase in either only formats -- spotlighting the band in concert at their arguable prime in 1992. Fans of drummer Dave Grohl also ought to be aware of the debut self-titled album of Them Crooked Vultures, a supergroup trio also featuring Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme. Altogether, two worthwhile Grohl-related excuses to skip out on holiday music. (hereisnirvana.com)
BOOK: Robert Hilburn / Corn Flakes With John Lennon And Other Tales From A Rock ‘N’ Roll Life – One of the all-time great music critics, Robert Hilburn seems to have as many fans as many of the artists he has covered. In short, Hilburn’s book is a collection of stories about assorted run-ins with legends like John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, and Bruce Springsteen. In spite of the star power featured, Hilburn is at all times fair to the subjects at hand. As an added bonus, the book’s introduction was penned by U2 leader Bono, who expresses his admiration for the author in such. (roberthilburnonline.com)
TOOL: MOG All Access – In an earlier column, I hailed Spotify, the European platform that enables users to listen to almost any song at any time at no cost. While Spotify is not yet ready for U.S. consumption, as of December 2nd, MOG All Access will be. Priced at $5 per month, subscribers will be able to stream any and all available audio as much as they please. All the while, the owners of the recordings and copyrights –- e.g. record labels, performers, songwriters –- receive compensation for such, which frees MOG users from any possible guilt. (mog.com)
