André Cymone is a bass player, a singer, a famed pioneer of the legendary Minneapolis Sound and a former collaborator of the mighty Prince, and he is ready to funk on his brand new solo album 
The Resurrection Of Funk. Adopting the moniker of “The Funk Forecaster” for this release, Cymone has created a love letter to the genre that seemingly inspired him the most throughout his musical life, and in doing so has created a whole world that you can step into and lose yourself in across this entire body of work.
There’s something inherently satisfying about the Minneapolis Sound that Cymone helped to perfect in the 1980s, and on “The Resurrection of Funk” he mostly sticks to the hallmarks of that style of music (Linn drums, synth pads, chucking electric guitars & that beautiful slap bass sound that Cymone is so known for). Because he plays all of the instruments himself on this album, he’s able to lock into an almighty pocket on every note of the proceedings, bringing the listener into a rich and wholly interesting sonic landscape on the record.
Lyrically, the album deals with two key subjects, the power of funk and the various romantic entanglements that The Funk Forecaster may have gotten himself into. I will admit, I would have preferred a little bit of variety in the lyrical content, as I think broadening out the topics throughout the track-listing would have made some of the music pop out even more, but that’s not to take away from the unmistakable fun of the lyrics we do get on here.
André Cymone is an underrated legend of the music world, and on this album has both reminded us all of just how great a musician he remains and of how important a genre funk really is. The Resurrection Of Funk is a wildly enjoyable slice of funk bliss. Long may the resurrection continue!
